Fluency ACTIVITY 1
In this activity emergent readers/writers combine the concepts of onset, rime and fluency into one fun exercise. Students in Pre-K or Kindergarten (And the activity could even be adapted for students as advanced as 2nd grade) Students work with partners and see who can identify the most words with the same rime in one minute, there is also a graphing component to this exercise, so incorporating math, bonus. This is a formative, informal, performance task. This activity should take no more than 20 minutes.

Fluency has 3 major components.
- Automaticity is "The ability to recognize familiar words without conscious thought and to identify unfamiliar words almost as quickly" (Tompkins, G., 2016)
- Speed is exactly what it sounds like, and researchers have determined a number for fluent readers speed. Fluent readers should read at least 100 words per minute (One assumes, of grade level appropriate text.)
- Prosody is "The ability to read sentences expressively with appropriate phrasing and intonation." (Tompkins,G., 2016)
