Letter Knowledge
Letter knowledge refers to a child developing an awareness of the 26 letters of the alphabet and gaining comfort and proficiency with the name and/or sound each letter represents. Below you will find an example of the types of activities and strategies a teacher might utilize to foster letter knowledge.
The document below is a primer or introduction to the concept of Letter or Alphabet knowledge and it contains teaching strategies and activities. The activities are intended for Early Emergent Literacy learners. These skills can be taught to a whole group, small groups or one-on-one. This is essentially all about getting students to realize that there are sounds associated with letters, these sounds combine to make words and these words can be used to communicate orally or in writing.

The second activity is more explicit, and specific, and familiarizes students with the letter sound and allows students to practice writing their letters as well. This is intended as a formative assessment, formal or informal and to be used with pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students. The practice should be completed by students independently and could be practiced with the teacher as a group, individually or in small groups.
