ə Remember this guy? yeah, it's a "schwa" - it represents an "uh" sound! Like in the words astute (uh-stoot), celestial (s-uh-les-chee-ul), and Zebra (zee-b-r-uh)
- When C is followed by a, o or u it is pronounced /k/ as in catastrophic, coddle, and cutlery.
- When C is followed by e, i or y it's pronounced as /s/ as in cetacean, city and cyborg.
- G can represent 2 sounds as in the word Garage. G is usually pronounced as /g/ as in garrote, gargantuan, and goad, but when G is followed by e, i or y it is pronounced as /j/ as gem, gibe and gyroscope. This second rule is not a steadfast rule as any keen observer may note that "Give" and "Get" don't conform to the rule.
- X is usually pronounced as /z/ if it is at the front of a word as in Xylem or Xylitol, but X is pronounced as /ks/ when found at the end of words as in crux, crucifix, and matrix.
