Sight Words Discussion
The importance of sight words is at least two-fold. First, the first 300 sight words make up two-thirds (approximately 67%) of all written language. In combination with the fact that they will form a framework on which all reading will be enabled, most of them cannot be sounded out phonetically. "At" and "An" are examples which can be sounded out phonetically, Could, would, should, them, they, where, when, who and why are examples that cannot be sounded out phonetically.

So which list should YOU and your child study? That is like saying, "Should my child learn to add or subtract?"
They're FREE! Study both.
Your child should be studying BOTH lists as soon as conceivably possible (The whole year BEFORE they enter pre-school parents should be quizzing them) In addition to Bach, Berlioz, Brahms, and Beethoven mothers should consider playing audio of sight words to their unborn children in-utero. If you scream out some sight words during conception, that couldn't hurt either.
Here are some VERY, VERY, informative and helpful links concerning sight words...
This site will allow you to print either a complete list of Dolch sight words, or print by grade level. For this reason and I am sure many still to be discovered resources, this web site has a LOT of potential for teachers.
