Thank goodness for "Onset" a concept within the instruction of literacy and phonics which is somewhat simple to understand. Onset refers to the initial phonological unit of any word. Example: "B" in bag or "Ph" in Pharmacological. We commonly use the word (Everyday parlance) in the phrase the "Onset of symptoms" referring to the when symptoms of an illness first appear. Hope that helps you remember that onset in literacy instruction refers to the first or beginning unit of a word. OK.
Rime refers to the string of letters that follow the initial/first phonological unit. Example: "ag" in bag or "armacological" in pharmacological. Prepare to have your mind blown. If two words contain the same rime, they will rhyme. You can't make this up. Examples: Bag, Gag, Jag, Lag, Flag, Hag, Brag...Now you try...Pharmacological and...???
